Welcome to Girls on the Run® (GOTR) of Northern NC

Girls on the Run® of Northern NC launched in 2010 by Henderson Family YMCA, Granville Vance District Health Department, and the Henderson Junior Woman’s Club. The program now serves approximately 130 girls at 10 sites in Northern NC.

Girls on the Run is a transformational physical activity based positive youth development program for girls in 3rd-8th grade. We teach life skills through dynamic interactive lessons and running games. The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5k running event. The goal of the program is to unleash confidence through accomplishment while establishing a lifetime appreciation of health and fitness.

Girls on the Run is an Affiliate Council of Girls on the Run International, which has a network of over 200 councils across the United States and Canada.

Site Recruitment

Girls on the Run of Northern North Carolina is Looking to Expand to More Locations in Vance and Granville counties.

Henderson Family YMCA STRIDE & Girls on the Run of Northern NC is currently looking for new sites to host teams for the Spring 2018 season and provide program opportunities to more boys and girls. STRIDE and Girls on the Run is a physical activity-based, positive youth development program that teaches key life skills to boys and girls in 3rd through 5th grade through dynamic discussions and fun games that creatively integrate running.

Sites can include local schools, community centers, churches and BGCs. Each site must have a volunteer site liaison, a safe space for physical activity and be able to provide both outdoor and indoor meeting locations.

At each site, volunteer coaches lead teams of 8-15 program participants through research-based curricula that include lessons on confidence, treating others with care and contributing to the community. During the ten-week program, they complete a community service project and become physically and emotionally prepared to participate in a celebratory 5k event.
